On April 12, the Alabama Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers presented Randy Glaze, Southern Nuclear Fleet Safety coordinator, with a $1,000 scholarship for his pursuit of a master’s degree in safety engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Glaze was presented the scholarship at the chapter’s annual recognition breakfast in Tuscaloosa.

The scholarship is awarded each year to one student in the program, and Glaze was selected out of 138 students by the UAB safety engineering graduate program faculty.

Dr. Donald Burke, graduate program director and professor of biomechanical engineering at UAB, commended Glaze for his academic success and dedication to the field.

“I’m honored to receive this scholarship and be recognized among my peers for something that’s so important to me in my personal and professional life,” said Glaze. “I was working in a paper mill as an instrumentation electrician when a co-worker was killed by electrocution. Workplace safety became my passion, and furthering my education will allow me to better contribute to improving safety systems and making work environments even safer.”

Glaze expects to complete his degree in 2019.
